It starts off slow but really picks up, especially if you continue to series. I don’t know why people here are calling it cliche or boring because I read lots of books in this genre of supernatural romance. A lot of times, they follow similar gender roles in the couple and it’s quite relative after a while. But this book has unique elements and personalities and is well written. This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I implore you to read the book and keep going even if you may get bored of it’s slow moving pace in the beginning. This book has such high reviews for a reason.

Writing at it’s finist

I picked this book up because I’m an indie author who needed to read newer books to get a feel for the market and this one came highly recommended. But as high of remarks it received, it wasn’t high enough. If anyone wants to learn who to write a perfect book, this is it. If anyone wants an amazing tale that does everything right, this is it It is by no mean original. It takes from common lore and puts it together in it’s own way. If you’ve read enough books, seen enough movies, played enough games, you can pretty much guess what’s going to happen. But I defy anyone to say that they will get all the parts right or that some of the twist and turns won’t get them As a Romantic myself, I hate stories that have romances that grow out of thin air or don’t feel natural, this one is completely natural. And as a guy who primarily reads paranormal/fantasy romance, so many times women authors get guys wrong. But this is not one of those times. I connected with the love interest even after the big reveal and all that happens. This is a must read book

I found this book refreshing for the exact reason many are saying they hated it. I’ll try to explain my reasoning without dropping spoilers. So many love stories now days are unreadable and boring because the story focuses so much on the love that it fails to touch on character development, individuality of the characters, and personal conflict. I picked up on the plot twist within the first few chapters. It was so painstakingly obvious. This allowed me to read the conversations and actions (knowing what would happen) and I felt the “realness” in a way that made the twist seem not as heartbreaking. Yes, the plot twist was annoying, particularly because of what happened the night before. He did many things that made the reveal so much more painful, but everything he did was necessary to make the heartbreak real, and not just an annoying inconvenience to Poppy. But, he had a duty and responsibility to the truth and who he was and that didn’t change even though he fell in love with her. Poppy never changed who she was or what she believed in SOLEY because she loved Hawke, so why would he? That’s why it’s a great love story. Because despite obviously loving each other, the story still focuses on the characters personal journey of coming to terms with who they are and falling in love despite those things. If you didn’t know the twist was coming and you were angered by the ending, I beg you to go back and read the story again because you’ll see without a doubt that it was in fact “real”. As for the read itself, I was bored at first because I was so confused about what was actually going on. The “ascension” and Poppy’s role as the maiden was never explained clearly, you just slowly pick up on what it is towards the middle of the book. I also got pretty annoyed because Poppy referenced what happened to her parents, how she got her scars, and what the Dukes “lessons” were on nearly every page but never explained those things until half way through the book. She would constantly vaguely mention them and you’re always left wondering what she actually meant. Considering all three of those things were essential to understanding who she was, the way she thought, and why she did certain things, I feel as if they should have been been made clear towards the beginning of the book, not just vaguely alluded upon and never fully explained. As for everything else, there was just enough action and spicy romance to keep the story interesting without going overboard. Poppy is the perfect heroine because she’s not just some idiot who is oblivious to how strong and beautiful she is, which you see in every single love story now days. She’s strong, a fighter, and smart, which makes her lovable and relatable from the start. She’s also the perfect example of character development. Interesting and exciting read from start to finish!

Worth losing sleep over

I started reading this looking for a trashy supernatural romance. What I got was a book that enthralled me and submerged me into another world like I haven’t experienced since Percy Jackson or Harry Potter when I was a kid. Action packed, spicy, shocking and unique this is truly an amazing book. I literally stayed up all night and read this book start to finish.

I’m not sure how to feel...

I’ve seen this book recently everywhere and let me just say, J.L. Armentrout’s writing is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. The way she is able to discuss setting changes and feelings is so insanely beautiful. I felt like I was in the story watching everything happen. For some reason, the entire plot of this book was a huge question mark for me. The beginning, when Poppy and Hawke were at the Red Pearl, completely threw me off. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

I devoured these books!

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

I literally devoured this book in three days. I’m often skeptical of books in this genre because the protagonists can come off as annoying or underdeveloped but Holy Moses the character development in this book was insane. I was moved to tears at some points when Poppy talked about wanting to be treated like a human being. It starts off slow but really picks up, especially if you continue to series. I don’t know why people here are calling it cliche or boring because I read lots of books in this genre of supernatural romance. A lot of times, they follow similar gender roles in the couple and it’s quite relative after a while. But this book has unique elements and personalities and is well written. This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I implore you to read the book and keep going even if you may get bored of it’s slow moving pace in the beginning. This book has such high reviews for a reason.

I picked this book up because I’m an indie author who needed to read newer books to get a feel for the market and this one came highly recommended. But as high of remarks it received, it wasn’t high enough. If anyone wants to learn who to write a perfect book, this is it. If anyone wants an amazing tale that does everything right, this is it It is by no mean original. It takes from common lore and puts it together in it’s own way. If you’ve read enough books, seen enough movies, played enough games, you can pretty much guess what’s going to happen. But I defy anyone to say that they will get all the parts right or that some of the twist and turns won’t get them As a Romantic myself, I hate stories that have romances that grow out of thin air or don’t feel natural, this one is completely natural. And as a guy who primarily reads paranormal/fantasy romance, so many times women authors get guys wrong. But this is not one of those times. I connected with the love interest even after the big reveal and all that happens. This is a must read book

I found this book refreshing for the exact reason many are saying they hated it. I’ll try to explain my reasoning without dropping spoilers. So many love stories now days are unreadable and boring because the story focuses so much on the love that it fails to touch on character development, individuality of the characters, and personal conflict. I picked up on the plot twist within the first few chapters. It was so painstakingly obvious. This allowed me to read the conversations and actions (knowing what would happen) and I felt the “realness” in a way that made the twist seem not as heartbreaking. Yes, the plot twist was annoying, particularly because of what happened the night before. He did many things that made the reveal so much more painful, but everything he did was necessary to make the heartbreak real, and not just an annoying inconvenience to Poppy. But, he had a duty and responsibility to the truth and who he was and that didn’t change even though he fell in love with her. Poppy never changed who she was or what she believed in SOLEY because she loved Hawke, so why would he? That’s why it’s a great love story. Because despite obviously loving each other, the story still focuses on the characters personal journey of coming to terms with who they are and falling in love despite those things. If you didn’t know the twist was coming and you were angered by the ending, I beg you to go back and read the story again because you’ll see without a doubt that it was in fact “real”. As for the read itself, I was bored at first because I was so confused about what was actually going on. The “ascension” and Poppy’s role as the maiden was never explained clearly, you just slowly pick up on what it is towards the middle of the book. I also got pretty annoyed because Poppy referenced what happened to her parents, how she got her scars, and what the Dukes “lessons” were on nearly every page but never explained those things until half way through the book. She would constantly vaguely mention them and you’re always left wondering what she actually meant. Considering all three of those things were essential to understanding who she was, the way she thought, and why she did certain things, I feel as if they should have been been made clear towards the beginning of the book, not just vaguely alluded upon and never fully explained. As for everything else, there was just enough action and spicy romance to keep the story interesting without going overboard. Poppy is the perfect heroine because she’s not just some idiot who is oblivious to how strong and beautiful she is, which you see in every single love story now days. She’s strong, a fighter, and smart, which makes her lovable and relatable from the start. She’s also the perfect example of character development. Interesting and exciting read from start to finish!

Worth losing sleep over

I started reading this looking for a trashy supernatural romance. What I got was a book that enthralled me and submerged me into another world like I haven’t experienced since Percy Jackson or Harry Potter when I was a kid. Action packed, spicy, shocking and unique this is truly an amazing book. I literally stayed up all night and read this book start to finish.

I’m not sure how to feel...

I’ve seen this book recently everywhere and let me just say, J.L. Armentrout’s writing is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. The way she is able to discuss setting changes and feelings is so insanely beautiful. I felt like I was in the story watching everything happen. For some reason, the entire plot of this book was a huge question mark for me. The beginning, when Poppy and Hawke were at the Red Pearl, completely threw me off. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

I went into this with low expectations because, despite the overwhelming glowing reviews, there are a lot of negative ones. Even so, I was bored and confused for the majority of the book. There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

I devoured these books!

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

I literally devoured this book in three days. I’m often skeptical of books in this genre because the protagonists can come off as annoying or underdeveloped but Holy Moses the character development in this book was insane. I was moved to tears at some points when Poppy talked about wanting to be treated like a human being. It starts off slow but really picks up, especially if you continue to series. I don’t know why people here are calling it cliche or boring because I read lots of books in this genre of supernatural romance. A lot of times, they follow similar gender roles in the couple and it’s quite relative after a while. But this book has unique elements and personalities and is well written. This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I implore you to read the book and keep going even if you may get bored of it’s slow moving pace in the beginning. This book has such high reviews for a reason.

I picked this book up because I’m an indie author who needed to read newer books to get a feel for the market and this one came highly recommended. But as high of remarks it received, it wasn’t high enough. If anyone wants to learn who to write a perfect book, this is it. If anyone wants an amazing tale that does everything right, this is it It is by no mean original. It takes from common lore and puts it together in it’s own way. If you’ve read enough books, seen enough movies, played enough games, you can pretty much guess what’s going to happen. But I defy anyone to say that they will get all the parts right or that some of the twist and turns won’t get them As a Romantic myself, I hate stories that have romances that grow out of thin air or don’t feel natural, this one is completely natural. And as a guy who primarily reads paranormal/fantasy romance, so many times women authors get guys wrong. But this is not one of those times. I connected with the love interest even after the big reveal and all that happens. This is a must read book

I found this book refreshing for the exact reason many are saying they hated it. I’ll try to explain my reasoning without dropping spoilers. So many love stories now days are unreadable and boring because the story focuses so much on the love that it fails to touch on character development, individuality of the characters, and personal conflict. I picked up on the plot twist within the first few chapters. It was so painstakingly obvious. This allowed me to read the conversations and actions (knowing what would happen) and I felt the “realness” in a way that made the twist seem not as heartbreaking. Yes, the plot twist was annoying, particularly because of what happened the night before. He did many things that made the reveal so much more painful, but everything he did was necessary to make the heartbreak real, and not just an annoying inconvenience to Poppy. But, he had a duty and responsibility to the truth and who he was and that didn’t change even though he fell in love with her. Poppy never changed who she was or what she believed in SOLEY because she loved Hawke, so why would he? That’s why it’s a great love story. Because despite obviously loving each other, the story still focuses on the characters personal journey of coming to terms with who they are and falling in love despite those things. If you didn’t know the twist was coming and you were angered by the ending, I beg you to go back and read the story again because you’ll see without a doubt that it was in fact “real”. As for the read itself, I was bored at first because I was so confused about what was actually going on. The “ascension” and Poppy’s role as the maiden was never explained clearly, you just slowly pick up on what it is towards the middle of the book. I also got pretty annoyed because Poppy referenced what happened to her parents, how she got her scars, and what the Dukes “lessons” were on nearly every page but never explained those things until half way through the book. She would constantly vaguely mention them and you’re always left wondering what she actually meant. Considering all three of those things were essential to understanding who she was, the way she thought, and why she did certain things, I feel as if they should have been been made clear towards the beginning of the book, not just vaguely alluded upon and never fully explained. As for everything else, there was just enough action and spicy romance to keep the story interesting without going overboard. Poppy is the perfect heroine because she’s not just some idiot who is oblivious to how strong and beautiful she is, which you see in every single love story now days. She’s strong, a fighter, and smart, which makes her lovable and relatable from the start. She’s also the perfect example of character development. Interesting and exciting read from start to finish!

Worth losing sleep over

I started reading this looking for a trashy supernatural romance. What I got was a book that enthralled me and submerged me into another world like I haven’t experienced since Percy Jackson or Harry Potter when I was a kid. I’m not sure how to feel...

I’ve seen this book recently everywhere and let me just say, J.L. Armentrout’s writing is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. The way she is able to discuss setting changes and feelings is so insanely beautiful. I felt like I was in the story watching everything happen. For some reason, the entire plot of this book was a huge question mark for me. The beginning, when Poppy and Hawke were at the Red Pearl, completely threw me off. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

I literally devoured this book in three days. I picked this book up because I’m an indie author who needed to read newer books to get a feel for the market and this one came highly recommended. But as high of remarks it received, it wasn’t high enough. If anyone wants to learn who to write a perfect book, this is it. If anyone wants an amazing tale that does everything right, this is it It is by no mean original. It takes from common lore and puts it together in it’s own way. If you’ve read enough books, seen enough movies, played enough games, you can pretty much guess what’s going to happen. But I defy anyone to say that they will get all the parts right or that some of the twist and turns won’t get them As a Romantic myself, I hate stories that have romances that grow out of thin air or don’t feel natural, this one is completely natural. And as a guy who primarily reads paranormal/fantasy romance, so many times women authors get guys wrong. But this is not one of those times. I connected with the love interest even after the big reveal and all that happens. This is a must read book

I found this book refreshing for the exact reason many are saying they hated it. I’ll try to explain my reasoning without dropping spoilers. So many love stories now days are unreadable and boring because the story focuses so much on the love that it fails to touch on character development, individuality of the characters, and personal conflict. I picked up on the plot twist within the first few chapters. It was so painstakingly obvious. This allowed me to read the conversations and actions (knowing what would happen) and I felt the “realness” in a way that made the twist seem not as heartbreaking. Yes, the plot twist was annoying, particularly because of what happened the night before. He did many things that made the reveal so much more painful, but everything he did was necessary to make the heartbreak real, and not just an annoying inconvenience to Poppy. But, he had a duty and responsibility to the truth and who he was and that didn’t change even though he fell in love with her. Poppy never changed who she was or what she believed in SOLEY because she loved Hawke, so why would he? That’s why it’s a great love story. Because despite obviously loving each other, the story still focuses on the characters personal journey of coming to terms with who they are and falling in love despite those things. If you didn’t know the twist was coming and you were angered by the ending, I beg you to go back and read the story again because you’ll see without a doubt that it was in fact “real”. As for the read itself, I was bored at first because I was so confused about what was actually going on. The “ascension” and Poppy’s role as the maiden was never explained clearly, you just slowly pick up on what it is towards the middle of the book. I also got pretty annoyed because Poppy referenced what happened to her parents, how she got her scars, and what the Dukes “lessons” were on nearly every page but never explained those things until half way through the book. She would constantly vaguely mention them and you’re always left wondering what she actually meant. Considering all three of those things were essential to understanding who she was, the way she thought, and why she did certain things, I feel as if they should have been been made clear towards the beginning of the book, not just vaguely alluded upon and never fully explained. As for everything else, there was just enough action and spicy romance to keep the story interesting without going overboard. Poppy is the perfect heroine because she’s not just some idiot who is oblivious to how strong and beautiful she is, which you see in every single love story now days. She’s strong, a fighter, and smart, which makes her lovable and relatable from the start. She’s also the perfect example of character development. Interesting and exciting read from start to finish!

Worth losing sleep over

I started reading this looking for a trashy supernatural romance. What I got was a book that enthralled me and submerged me into another world like I haven’t experienced since Percy Jackson or Harry Potter when I was a kid. Action packed, spicy, shocking and unique this is truly an amazing book. I literally stayed up all night and read this book start to finish.

I’m not sure how to feel...

I’ve seen this book recently everywhere and let me just say, J.L. Armentrout’s writing is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. The way she is able to discuss setting changes and feelings is so insanely beautiful. I felt like I was in the story watching everything happen. For some reason, the entire plot of this book was a huge question mark for me. The beginning, when Poppy and Hawke were at the Red Pearl, completely threw me off. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

I devoured these books!

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

Love this series.

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

I literally devoured this book in three days. I’m often skeptical of books in this genre because the protagonists can come off as annoying or underdeveloped but Holy Moses the character development in this book was insane. I was moved to tears at some points when Poppy talked about wanting to be treated like a human being. It starts off slow but really picks up, especially if you continue to series. I don’t know why people here are calling it cliche or boring because I read lots of books in this genre of supernatural romance. A lot of times, they follow similar gender roles in the couple and it’s quite relative after a while. But this book has unique elements and personalities and is well written. This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I implore you to read the book and keep going even if you may get bored of it’s slow moving pace in the beginning. This book has such high reviews for a reason.

Considering all three of those things were essential to understanding who she was, the way she thought, and why she did certain things, I feel as if they should have been been made clear towards the beginning of the book, not just vaguely alluded upon and never fully explained. As for everything else, there was just enough action and spicy romance to keep the story interesting without going overboard. Poppy is the perfect heroine because she’s not just some idiot who is oblivious to how strong and beautiful she is, which you see in every single love story now days. She’s strong, a fighter, and smart, which makes her lovable and relatable from the start. She’s also the perfect example of character development. Interesting and exciting read from start to finish!

Worth losing sleep over

I started reading this looking for a trashy supernatural romance. What I got was a book that enthralled me and submerged me into another world like I haven’t experienced since Percy Jackson or Harry Potter when I was a kid. I’m not sure how to feel...

I’ve seen this book recently everywhere and let me just say, J.L. Armentrout’s writing is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. The way she is able to discuss setting changes and feelings is so insanely beautiful. I felt like I was in the story watching everything happen. For some reason, the entire plot of this book was a huge question mark for me. The beginning, when Poppy and Hawke were at the Red Pearl, completely threw me off. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

I went into this with low expectations because, despite the overwhelming glowing reviews, there are a lot of negative ones. Even so, I was bored and confused for the majority of the book. There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

It starts off slow but really picks up, especially if you continue to series. I don’t know why people here are calling it cliche or boring because I read lots of books in this genre of supernatural romance. A lot of times, they follow similar gender roles in the couple and it’s quite relative after a while. But this book has unique elements and personalities and is well written. This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. I implore you to read the book and keep going even if you may get bored of it’s slow moving pace in the beginning. I picked this book up because I’m an indie author who needed to read newer books to get a feel for the market and this one came highly recommended. But as high of remarks it received, it wasn’t high enough. If anyone wants to learn who to write a perfect book, this is it. If anyone wants an amazing tale that does everything right, this is it It is by no mean original. It takes from common lore and puts it together in it’s own way. If you’ve read enough books, seen enough movies, played enough games, you can pretty much guess what’s going to happen. But I defy anyone to say that they will get all the parts right or that some of the twist and turns won’t get them As a Romantic myself, I hate stories that have romances that grow out of thin air or don’t feel natural, this one is completely natural. And as a guy who primarily reads paranormal/fantasy romance, so many times women authors get guys wrong. But this is not one of those times. I connected with the love interest even after the big reveal and all that happens. This is a must read book

I found this book refreshing for the exact reason many are saying they hated it. I’ll try to explain my reasoning without dropping spoilers. So many love stories now days are unreadable and boring because the story focuses so much on the love that it fails to touch on character development, individuality of the characters, and personal conflict. I picked up on the plot twist within the first few chapters. It was so painstakingly obvious. This allowed me to read the conversations and actions (knowing what would happen) and I felt the “realness” in a way that made the twist seem not as heartbreaking. Yes, the plot twist was annoying, particularly because of what happened the night before. He did many things that made the reveal so much more painful, but everything he did was necessary to make the heartbreak real, and not just an annoying inconvenience to Poppy. But, he had a duty and responsibility to the truth and who he was and that didn’t change even though he fell in love with her. Poppy never changed who she was or what she believed in SOLEY because she loved Hawke, so why would he? That’s why it’s a great love story. Because despite obviously loving each other, the story still focuses on the characters personal journey of coming to terms with who they are and falling in love despite those things. If you didn’t know the twist was coming and you were angered by the ending, I beg you to go back and read the story again because you’ll see without a doubt that it was in fact “real”. As for the read itself, I was bored at first because I was so confused about what was actually going on. The “ascension” and Poppy’s role as the maiden was never explained clearly, you just slowly pick up on what it is towards the middle of the book. I also got pretty annoyed because Poppy referenced what happened to her parents, how she got her scars, and what the Dukes “lessons” were on nearly every page but never explained those things until half way through the book. She would constantly vaguely mention them and you’re always left wondering what she actually meant. So did the sex scenes in the middle and toward the very end of the novel. It felt rushed and not genuine. Now, the plot twists got me. They got me for sure. They threw me so off that I had to go back a re-read just to see if it made sense. Armentrout’s writing is so well thought out and it completely took me for a spin.

The Ending is Everything

I was so excited to read this book because of the number of 5 star ratings. However, I was very disappointed at 30% of what I read. The latter half of this book is what makes it a good book and made me change my mind about not continuing the series.

Wow! The story was well thought out, perfect amount of build up. It was heart pulling and sexy. I don’t know how she managed it but WOW!! I will be reading the other books in the series IMMEDIATELY! A must read!

It’s one of my favorite series.

If you’re a fan of ACOTAR by Sarah J Maas, you’ll love this series. It does start off a tad slow. There’s a little world building but it picks up pretty fast. The characters are amazing. I absolutely love Poppy. I’m currently finishing the 3rd book. And let me tell you, it gets better and better with each book! There’s also a Facebook group where JLA leaves spoilers and teasers! It’s called From Blood and Ash Series Spoiler Group. She awesome interacts with her fans. So not only is the book series AMAZING!! But the author is also amazing!

Poppy is an interesting heroine strong and vulnerability well balanced. Likable. With a inner strength to withstand her difficult situation that is abusive at times. Hawke character is has been written with too many narcissistic traits to be likable. His teasing comes off as degrading. His protectiveness is not enough to make up for his manipulation of her. Abusiveness should never be framed as okay in a relationship. This is not the kind of romance that I typically care for. You would expect more mutual respect in the age of the me too movement.

I went into this with low expectations because, despite the overwhelming glowing reviews, there are a lot of negative ones. Even so, I was bored and confused for the majority of the book. There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes so many times. The love interest and his friend are interesting and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. This book contains: -Violence -Crude Language -Sex and Sexual Themes

Distinctly Average.

I’d say solid 3.5 Stars. But that’s .5 is really only because of the last like 150ish pages of the book when things FINALLY started to get interesting. I totally understand that not all books are supposed to be fantastic literary achievements, in fact I LOVE me some trash books just because they are fun. Even with that in mind, I’m honestly not sure why so many people have hyped this book, is it decent, yeah. Is it transport me into another world where I get lost in fantasy, no. Am I jumping at the bit to read the next one, no. It took me a month to read this, only because I would always find something more interesting to do or read instead. I think my biggest issue with this book is the amount of fluff that JLA inserts. And I’m not talking about cutesy, rot your teeth moments. There were SO MANY TIMES when I was reading this and thought “she’s just putting this here to meet her page count.” Literally, when the MCs finally get down to dirty business there is about 2 pages (reading on a nook) of Poppy’s inner monologue about how she deserves to live her life, that interrupts the flow of passion. -____- I AM NOT HEAR FOR MONOLOGUE. I AM HERE FOR THE SEX! Another thing that really got to me was the pacing and the author used the dialogue/banter between Poppy and Hawke, or really any character to break up the HUGE chunks of information. There were a lot of times where they banter and then boom change of scene or abrupt halt to move on. But then there were times that the banter was inane and pointless but they just kept going on, and I would again think about JLA trying to hit her publishers desired page count. I did like Poppy as a character and I think the author did a really good job with her characterization and understanding her desires and frustrations. She is mostly why I kept plugging along. But really, if you can get past the slow as molasses, pretty predicable plot, and a lot text dumping, it’s an okay way to spend your time.

I devoured these books!

Just wow. The minute I picked this book up, I read it and the sequel within 2 days, and I’m eagerly awaiting the 3rd. The romance is steamy, the characters are compelling, and I love the world. I like how the author created a “vampire” story without it being a cliché smut book, and instead more of an epic fantasy. I think Poppy’s powers are really cool too and she uses them in an interesting way. A wonderful mix of action, magic, and romance overall.

I can see why this book has raving reviews. I have to admit that the first half of the book, for me, felt slow and drawn out, but I can see why-So you can understand what’s going on, and you can actually feel it, when the maiden finally snaps and lashes out. Then the other half, that’s when things started to get really exciting. I didn’t see it coming who Hawke truly was. Its so hard to stop reading. It’s 0330 and I just purchased the second book!

I hadn’t read a fantasy book in a while, that is to say that I enjoyed From Blood and Ash thoroughly. The characters are amazing and Poppy is such a strong female main character, I loved her strong personality and it gave the book life.

This is one of my favorite young adult, fantasy, and romance books! I already know I’ll keep coming back to it many times over the years because it’s so good! The plot is intricate, the storyline is exciting, and the beginning jumps in immediately. The characters are so goooood and you can understand their positions and personalities so beautifully. They make so much sense. Hawke is a character you can easily get behind and I love Poppy as well but better yet both characters are awesome by themselves (but I especially love them together. 20/10 would recommend completely! I’m currently waiting on the third book (the second one I enjoyed also but just a heads up it did drag a little).

Love this series.

YA and paranormal fan. I absolutely fell in love with Hawke. He’s mysterious, considerate, sexy, and funny. This was my favorite series of hers and I can’t wait for the 3rd book. I will say she gets a little wordy (especially book 2) and I did skip when Poppy explains details of her soundings. But the sex scenes are very good, well spaced, and their love story is worth the read.

I literally devoured this book in three days. I’m often skeptical of books in this genre because the protagonists can come off as annoying or underdeveloped but Holy Moses the character development in this book was insane. I was moved to tears at some points when Poppy talked about wanting to be treated like a human being. And the tension between her and Cas is just *chefs kiss* Literally 15/10 could not recommend it more!
